Home > Peru & The Inca Trail > OllantaytamboOllantaytamboThis site is known as the only place the Incas defeated the Spaniards in a battle. They did this by damning the nearby river and flooding the valley. The stones for this temple fortress were quarried in the mountains on the opposite side of the river. The Incas dragged stones the size of large automobiles down the mountain, across the river, to the positions you see them in today. I was fascinated by the ruins called the granary, in the mountains on the opposite side of the valley because very few people visit them. After lunch, Dalmiro and I climbed this mountain and explored the granary. Of course, nobody told me that Dalmiro was part mountain goat! He continued on to the ruins of a small temple as you can see in this photo. Cattle and pigs are uncommon at this altitude, so the Peruvians eat "coy." Better known as guinea pig. Honestly, it does taste like chicken! |
