La Danza de los Viejitos de Michoacán
La danza de los viejitos, the dance of the little old men, traditionally performed by the purépecha indians of the Pátzcuaro region of Michoacán. With a fine sense of humor, the masked dancers take turns dancing with a loud slap of their wooden sandals on the pavement. Once all of the old dancers have entertained the audience while dancing with or ignoring their canes, the dance group form a chain with their canes and dance like a serpent through the audience. The music plays faster and faster as the shortest old man at the end of the line struggles to hang on.
At the end of the dance, the troop remove their masks to reveal that they are all young men or boys.
