Mexico Home > San Juan Ulua Fort in Veracruz City - October, 2004 San Juan Ulua Fort in Veracruz City The history of Veracruz City started when the Conquistador Hernán Cortés anchored his boats near an island off of the city's shore in 1519. He would later burn his ships in this very same harbor, giving his 508 men little choice but to remain in Mexico. Cortés and his men marched from the sea 250 miles to Moctezuma's great Aztec capital, now known as Mexico City. I went to Veracruz City with Habitat for Humanity for the Jimmy Carter Work Project, in October 2004. There is also a very interesting museum in Xalapa which features giant Olmec heads. |
