Mexico Home > Veracruz City - October, 2004 Olmec Heads in Xalapa Sometime between 1400 and 1200 B.C., approximately between the Trojan war, and the golden age of Athens, the Olmec (ol-mek) civilization was thriving on the gulf coast of Mexico. Although this civilization ended about 3000 years ago, the Olmec were among the first Americans to design ritual centres and raise earthen pyramids in the American continents. These stone heads, with striking African features, are carved from volcanic rock. They stand from five to eleven feet high, and weigh as much as 36,000 pounds. I went to Veracruz City with Habitat for Humanity for the Jimmy Carter Work Project, in October 2004. The San Juan Ulua Fort once protected Veracruz City. |
