Xochicalco - Place of the House of the Flowers
Xochicalco is the largest and most impressive complex in Central Mexico after Teotihuacan. Set on a hill top with Teotihuacan-style geometric architecture, similar to the ruins at Monte Alban. One of Xochicalco's attractions is the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent with some of the finest decorative panelling outside of the Yucatán. We also went into the very dark, intriguing Observatory cave, where a single shaft of light comes through 60 feet of man-made mountainside, to illuminate specifically aligned spot on the floor. Twice a year, at the equinoxes, the entire cavern is flooded with light from this shaft. Indicating that it was time to plant or harvest crops.
Xochicalco was occupied from 600 to 900AD, from the fall of the culture at Teotihuacan to the north, to a fateful battle sometime in 900 when the entire complex was looted and burned.
