Tonina, Mayan Ruins in Chiapas, Mexico
Toniná, a Mayan ruin just outside of Ocosingo, a couple of hours' drive from San Cristóbal in the state of Chiapas. It is believed that Toniná formed into an organized settlement around 300 A.D, and the the height of its development occurred between 600 and 900 A.D. Like most of the other Mayan centers, it was abandoned for unknown reasons around 900 A.D. The site was first reported in the 18th century, and there are some documents of visits during the 19th century. It wasn't until 1970 that archeological explorations were started, and not until 1981 that conservation and restoration work began.
