Campeche, Mexico
Campeche was founded by the Spanish in 1540 on what had been an ancient Mayan city. A city wall was erected to help defend Campeche and its port from nearly constant attack by English and Dutch buccaneers and pirates, (like Francis Drake). In addition to the city wall, two large forts were built on nearby hills.
We were fortunate to visit Campeche for Jan's birthday, which happened to be during Carnival this year. There were parades every evening along the malecón, the road closest to the ocean. Campeche also has a lot of Mayan ruins. The closest, is Edzna.
