This is not surprising considering that Xi'ian was the capital of China for centuries before and was fast becoming a large trading base on the Silk Route. In 1974, five farmers unearthed parts of a terracotta soldier. They notified the local government and when the team of archeologists arrived, they first anticipated finishing in about 20 days. To date, archeologists have reassembled some 1,700 soldiers of the anticipated 6,000 total. There are three pits the size of large airplane hangers and a museum containing two bronze chariots that were more recently discovered and restored from over 3,500 broken pieces.
